Creating A Pet Portrait:
Turning A Dream Into Art
February 12, 2026

For years, I’ve told people that painting pet portraits would one day be my retirement dream job—something I’d do “one day.” Life had other plans, and at 63, that dream is no longer a someday goal. It’s happening now.
After leaving my role in a hospital marketing department, I found myself at a big crossroads. I didn’t feel ready to retire—but I was maybe ready to fully lean into what I love most: creating meaningful, hand-painted portraits that celebrate the pets who hold such a special place in our lives. Becoming a full-time pet portrait artist feels like a dream come true, and I’m excited to finally give it my full attention.
What It’s Like to Commission a Pet Portrait
Every portrait begins with special connection. When a client contacts me, I will ask for several high-quality photos of their pet—taken at eye level if possible. A full-body image, a close-up, and even a short video help me truly understand your pet’s personality, expressions, and little quirks that make them unique.
Clear, in-focus photos are essential, as they allow me to capture fine details accurately. For clients local to Connecticut, I also offer professional pet photography for an additional fee.
Once your portrait is underway, you will be part of the journey in creating your portrait. I share progress photos throughout the process—from the initial drawing to mid-way updates and the finished painting. Most portraits take about 4–5 weeks to complete and are carefully packaged and shipped to your home.
More Than a Painting—A Tribute to Your Pet
The most meaningful part for me begins when I start a painting. My goal isn’t just to create a likeness—it’s to bring your pet’s spirit to life. I focus on the emotion in their eyes, the subtle expression of their smile, and the way their fur moves and rests naturally through as much detail as I can possibly paint, which could be single tiny hairs along their back or around their eyes.
Each portrait becomes a personal mission: to create a piece of art that feels like them. Something that makes you smile every time you walk by, and reminds you of the bond you share.
If you’ve ever considered honoring your pet with a custom portrait, I’d love to work with you. This chapter of my life is about following my true passion in art —and helping others celebrate the animals they love most.
